A new documentary from Roku Originals premiered this week at the Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival, examining the experiences of professional female athletes navigating motherhood. “Gamechangers: Mother/Athlete” features interviews with five WNBA players, including legendary trailblazer Sheryl Swoopes, as they discuss their personal journeys through pregnancy, postpartum recovery, and raising children while competing at the highest levels of professional sports.
Swoopes, who signed with the WNBA during its inaugural 1997 season, became pregnant just as the league was launching. In the documentary, she reflects on her initial fear of disclosing her pregnancy to her team and the public, worried that she would let everyone down. Despite these concerns, she moved forward with her decision and committed to doing her best under challenging circumstances. Director Christine Turner emphasizes that the film aims to showcase athletes as complete human beings facing everyday struggles, not just as heroes on the court.
The documentary highlights a significant gap in support systems within professional women’s basketball. For nearly three decades, female athletes had to independently manage their schedules, finances, and medical needs during pregnancy and motherhood with minimal organizational guidance. The WNBA only introduced fully paid maternity leave in 2018. Swoopes advocates for self-care and encourages others to embrace unexpected life changes while remaining confident in their decisions.
“Gamechangers: Mother/Athlete” will be available to stream free on The Roku Channel beginning this fall.
