Formula 1’s newest venue at Madrid’s Madring circuit has introduced a distinctive challenge that could prove decisive throughout race weekend. Turn 12, officially known as La Monumental, features a 13.5-degree banking angle—approximately 24 percent incline—that presents unique demands on vehicle performance and tire management.
Despite being less banked than Zandvoort’s final corner, tire supplier Pirelli has identified La Monumental as the most demanding section on the entire F1 calendar. The critical difference lies not in peak vertical energy but in sustained load duration. Drivers experience approximately 5.5 seconds of continuous pressure through this corner, roughly double the typical exposure time at comparable banked turns. This extended duty cycle creates substantially greater stress on tire construction and integrity.
Testing revealed significant variation among team simulations regarding whether the corner could be navigated at full throttle. While some teams predicted grip limitations requiring throttle reduction, others anticipated flat-out capability. Real-world data confirmed the former scenario, with drivers lifting 30-40 percent during the initial section before regaining full acceleration. Early telemetry aligns with Pirelli’s pre-weekend calculations, though officials continue analyzing comprehensive load data and sectioning tires to ensure no safety concerns emerge as the weekend progresses.
This throttle modulation requirement adds an additional skill component to the circuit, as drivers seek to optimize their approach through this technically complex section where slight differences in technique could yield meaningful lap time advantages.
