The Cincinnati Reds have signed right-handed pitcher Darius Vines to a minor-league contract following his stint in the Mexican League. The 28-year-old has been assigned to Triple-A Louisville, the Reds’ top affiliate.
Vines comes to Cincinnati after playing for Tigres de Quintana Roo in Mexico, where he posted a 3.32 ERA over 15 starts before being traded and subsequently released in August. Previously, the pitcher spent time with the Atlanta Braves organization, appearing in nine games across the 2023 and 2024 seasons with an ERA of 5.82. He made four starts during his time in the majors.
The Braves selected Vines in the 2019 draft from California State University, Bakersfield. His professional journey has taken him through multiple organizations, including the Houston Astros and Chicago Cubs, who drafted him in 2016 and 2017 respectively. Before his college years, Vines was a multi-sport athlete at St. Bonaventure High School in Ventura, California, where he excelled as a shortstop, quarterback, and basketball point guard.
Vines’ major-league debut in 2023 was notable, as he became the first visiting pitcher to debut at Colorado’s Coors Field while pitching six innings with two or fewer runs allowed. The Reds hope to develop the pitcher in their minor-league system as he works toward a potential return to the majors.
