Healthcare has emerged as a pivotal issue in Wisconsin’s political landscape, with Democratic organizers employing face-to-face conversations to engage voters on the topic. In the state’s third congressional district, a nonpartisan grassroots group called GrassRoots Organizing Western Wisconsin is conducting extensive door-to-door canvassing focused on healthcare access and expansion of the state’s Medicaid program, known as BadgerCare.
The organization uses a method called “deep canvassing,” involving 15-20 minute conversations where organizers share personal healthcare experiences and listen to voters’ stories about medical hardships. Bill Hogseth, a co-executive director of the group, discusses his own seizures and their impact on his life to encourage others to open up about ambulance rides, hospital bills, and other healthcare challenges they have faced. Approximately 40 trained canvassers are conducting these conversations three times weekly throughout the region, with plans for 4,000 total interactions by November.
The healthcare focus comes as the district becomes increasingly significant in national politics, with competing visions for the system’s future. Democrats are highlighting Republican incumbent Derrick Van Orden’s support for healthcare cuts, while Democratic primary winner Rebecca Cooke has prioritized healthcare system reform in her campaign platform. Meanwhile, two western Wisconsin hospitals closed permanently in 2024, and researchers warn others may face similar fates.
