Vero Beach quarterback Champ Monds delivered a stellar performance in his team’s season opener against Jensen Beach on Friday night at the Citrus Bowl. The Notre Dame commit orchestrated five touchdowns—three passing and two rushing—as the home team dominated with a 34-0 shutout victory. The game began 75 minutes late due to lightning delays and concluded early when additional lightning forced officials to call the contest with roughly eleven minutes remaining in regulation.
Monds showcased his versatility and decision-making throughout the evening, completing 12 of 14 passes for 195 yards while also carrying the ball four times for 25 yards. He distributed his passes among six different receivers, with wide receiver Marc Johns leading the receiving corps with four catches for 77 yards. Early in the matchup, Monds connected with Marcus Melbourne on a 72-yard touchdown reception. He later found Micah Roberts and Marc Jones for scoring passes before rushing in two touchdowns of his own to put the game out of reach.
Head coach Lenny Jankowski credited the offensive scheme and Monds’ understanding of it for the distributing of the football. “We have five eligible receivers on each and every play, and Champ has a good understanding of what we’re trying to do on offense,” Jankowski explained, noting the team capitalizes on defensive vulnerabilities rather than forcing plays into coverage.
In other regional action Thursday, St. Lucie West Centennial defeated Lake Worth 53-14 in a convincing performance that marked a significant improvement from the Eagles’ previous game. Multiple running backs contributed touchdowns for Centennial in what represented the first victory for new head coach Alfred Yates.
