Acclaimed filmmaker Alex Gibney has unveiled a teaser trailer for his upcoming documentary examining the life and influence of billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk. Distributed by Bleecker Street, the four-hour film offers a critical examination of the world’s wealthiest individual and his unchecked power. The preview features footage of space rockets launching and subsequently failing, paired with commentary from various speakers who characterize Musk in predominantly negative terms, describing him as chaotic, cruel, and potentially unstable.
Gibney spent several years developing this project and has emphasized that his intent extends beyond simple judgments about Musk’s character. Rather than presenting a straightforward endorsement or condemnation, the director aims to explore how Musk operates and the consequences of his decision-making patterns. In recent interviews, Gibney drew parallels between Musk and other prominent figures he has previously documented, suggesting a pattern of what some call “noble cause corruption”—where individuals justify questionable actions through commitment to important causes.
According to Gibney, Musk’s pursuit of making humanity multiplanetary and advancing environmental sustainability has apparently justified controversial behavior. The director compared these dynamics to historical cases including the Enron scandal and Elizabeth Holmes’s deception at Theranos. The documentary will premiere at the Venice Film Festival before its theatrical release scheduled for October 16, followed by a subsequent broadcast on HBO.
