Ashley St. Clair, an ex-partner of billionaire Elon Musk, has chosen to forgo a substantial financial settlement in order to participate in a forthcoming documentary examination of the tech entrepreneur. St. Clair declined a $40 million non-disclosure agreement after giving birth to Musk’s 13th child, a decision that allowed her to speak candidly for filmmaker Alex Gibney’s project titled “Musk,” which premiered at the Venice Film Festival this week.
At a press conference for the documentary, St. Clair reflected on her decision to reject the financial incentive to remain silent. She emphasized that accepting such an offer would have forced her to reconsider the fundamental value of her voice and right to speak. St. Clair stated she wanted to demonstrate to her children that financial comfort should never come at the expense of telling the truth, and she expressed hope that her willingness to come forward might inspire others to do the same.
St. Clair also addressed her earlier involvement with conservative political commentary, expressing regret for promoting positions she now views differently. The 28-year-old acknowledged her age and influences at the time as contributing factors but stressed that such circumstances do not excuse her previous actions. She stated that by speaking out currently, she aims to demonstrate accountability and encourage positive change.
Gibney’s nearly four-hour documentary examines Musk’s influence and character, with the filmmaker suggesting that the billionaire’s achievements contain elements of illusion. Musk declined to participate in the project and has previously criticized it as a “hit piece.”
