Verdigris volleyball is entering the 2026 season with considerable experience and unfinished business. The Lady Cardinals narrowly missed qualifying for the Class 3A state tournament last fall, falling in a five-set regional championship match to Chouteau-Mazie. Now, with eight seniors returning to the roster, the program hopes to break through and return to the state stage for the first time since 2022.
The senior class features several standout players, including Addi McMahan, who brings offensive firepower as a hitter, and setter Andie Boyd, who provides consistency in a crucial position. Emerson Wawrzonek, a transfer from Owasso, and Kaydence O’Brien round out the veteran leadership alongside ShiAnne Sanchez, Jylian Pagan, Mia Guerrero, and Julia Timms. Coach Caleb Horton praised his squad’s volleyball intelligence, noting that their understanding of the game could prove invaluable as they navigate a competitive Class 4A landscape.
Beyond experience, Verdigris has addressed a significant weakness from last season: depth. Last year’s injury problems exposed limited roster options, but Horton indicated the team has more flexibility this year. Younger players including Charlie Watson, Sophi Nick, Jolie White, Trista Maxey, and Tynleigh Jackson-Davis have opportunities to develop alongside the veteran core, providing insurance against potential injuries.
Early signs are encouraging. The Lady Cardinals lost just one match during a recent 10-team scrimmage, suggesting their preparation is on track. With motivation from last year’s near-miss and a more balanced roster, Verdigris appears well-positioned to achieve its state tournament goal.
