Chelsea’s ownership structure is undergoing significant changes as Todd Boehly and Mark Walter consider selling their combined stakes to majority shareholder Clearlake Capital. According to reports, the two co-owners are in active discussions with Behdad Eghbali’s investment firm, which currently controls approximately 61.5 percent of the Premier League club.
The potential sale comes amid reports of tensions between Boehly and Eghbali, with disagreements over strategic decisions including plans for a new stadium. While Boehly has maintained a visible presence at Chelsea since the club’s purchase from Roman Abramovich in 2022, his influence has diminished over time, with Eghbali emerging as the primary decision-maker. The arrangement would allow Clearlake to consolidate complete control of the organization.
The timing is particularly notable given Walter’s recent sale of the Los Angeles Lakers for $12.5 billion. Current valuations place Chelsea at approximately £5 billion, potentially allowing both investors to roughly double their initial £325 million investments made four years ago. Boehly is scheduled to complete his five-year term as chairman at the end of the 2026-27 season, which may influence the transaction timeline.
Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss also holds a 12.8 percent stake in the club, though his position regarding these negotiations remains uncertain. Chelsea has declined to comment on the ongoing discussions.
