The Houston Texans addressed depth concerns at wide receiver by signing veteran players Sterling Shepard and Zay Jones on August 21st. The moves come after second-year receiver Jayden Higgins suffered a season-ending torn ACL during a joint practice with the Las Vegas Raiders earlier in the week, leaving the team’s receiving corps depleted heading into the regular season.
Both Shepard and Jones will compete for roster spots during the final stretch of the preseason, with limited time to make their cases before final cuts. The Texans also conducted workouts with Josh Reynolds but ultimately opted to sign Shepard and Jones, who will join an already crowded receiver room featuring Nico Collins, Tank Dell, Xavier Hutchinson, and others.
The receiver position has been a consistent challenge for Houston, with Collins dealing with recurring injuries throughout his career despite productive seasons when healthy. Dell is working his way back from a significant knee injury, while younger players like Hutchinson and Jaylin Noel are expected to take on expanded roles without Higgins in the lineup.
With only one preseason game remaining before the roster deadline, Shepard and Jones face considerable pressure to stand out in practice to earn their spots on the 53-man roster. The influx of veteran receivers highlights Houston’s need to solidify depth at a position that has posed ongoing injury concerns.
