As the Pittsburgh Steelers prepare for their final roster decisions, legendary quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has voiced strong support for running back Lew Nichols to earn a spot on the 53-man roster. During an episode of his “Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger” podcast, the former Steelers star praised Nichols’ recent performance during the preseason, suggesting the undrafted back has done enough to secure a job in the NFL.
Nichols has had a winding path to the Steelers organization. Originally signed by the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent in 2023, he was released during his rookie year. The running back subsequently cycled through the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice squad before joining Pittsburgh in July 2025. Despite being waived during initial roster cuts, Nichols was brought back on the practice squad and made his NFL debut later that season against Indianapolis.
This preseason, Nichols has impressed with his efficiency, accumulating 51 rushing yards on just 10 carries alongside two receptions for 15 yards. Roethlisberger believes the former Central Michigan standout deserves consideration not only from Pittsburgh but from other teams seeking depth at the position. His strong performances could create a difficult decision for the Steelers’ coaching staff as they finalize their roster composition.
