Sheridan’s football team mounted an impressive second-half comeback to defeat Watkins Memorial 21-14 on August 28 in Thornville. The Generals trailed 14-0 at intermission after the Warriors capitalized on an early fumble recovery and two rushing touchdowns. However, senior leadership proved decisive in the locker room as Sheridan’s offense and defense both shifted momentum dramatically in the second half.
The turning point came in the fourth quarter when quarterback Tyce Whiteman connected with receiver James Solomon on a crucial third-and-14 play from midfield. Solomon adjusted to make the catch along the sideline at Watkins’ 10-yard line, setting up Whiteman’s touchdown pass to fellow senior Reed Parkison. The two-point conversion gave Sheridan a 21-14 advantage with 7:27 remaining, which proved to be the final score.
Sheridan’s defensive unit stifled the Warriors’ offense in the second half, holding them to just 96 yards. Seniors Tucker Shonk, Ethan Riley and Griff Murray anchored a defense that forced multiple punts and a turnover on downs to seal the victory. After losing their season opener to Licking Valley, the Generals improved to 1-1, while Watkins fell to 0-2 despite a dominant opening half performance.
