Actress Shailene Woodley recently disclosed her emotional reaction to learning that her scenes as Mary Jane Watson were removed from “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.” Speaking during a SAG-AFTRA Foundation interview, Woodley explained that she discovered her exclusion from the film approximately one year after completing her work on set opposite Andrew Garfield.
Woodley expressed how meaningful the role had been to her, describing Mary Jane as her favorite character from childhood and Spider-Man as her favorite superhero. She recalled filming approximately three scenes with Garfield before receiving the news that her character would not appear in the final cut. According to Woodley, filmmakers decided to postpone introducing Mary Jane until after the storyline involving Emma Stone’s character resolved.
Producer Matt Tolmach later explained the creative decision, noting that the production had written an extensive script but ultimately determined that Mary Jane’s story could not fit within the movie. Although the filmmakers intended to feature the character in a subsequent installment, that project never materialized. Woodley acknowledged uncertainty about the exact reasons behind the decision, humorously suggesting her performance may have warranted the cut.
