Serena Williams will compete in mixed doubles at the US Open alongside world number two Carlos Alcaraz, marking her return to the tournament after a four-year absence. The US Tennis Association granted the pairing a wild card entry into the competition, which begins its main draw on Tuesday. The winning mixed doubles team will receive $1 million in prize money.
Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam champion, will not participate in singles competition at this year’s event. The USTA allocated its remaining women’s wild card to American Sofia Kenin instead. However, Williams retains the option to compete in women’s doubles with her older sister Venus, with whom she recently partnered at the Cincinnati Open.
Alcaraz, the defending men’s champion at the US Open, is making his comeback after missing competition since April due to a wrist injury. The mixed doubles format has undergone significant changes in recent years, transforming into a condensed two-day event featuring 16 teams designed to attract elite singles players. Williams previously won a mixed doubles title at the US Open in 1998 with Max Mirnyi, before establishing her dominant singles record at the venue.
