King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard surprised attendees at their Queens concert with an unexpected musical guest. The Australian psychedelic rock group, performing at Forest Hills Stadium, brought out Max Weinberg, the renowned drummer for Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band, to join them onstage during their Saturday show.
The appearance came about after the band’s regular collaborator Jay Weinberg, Max’s son and former Slipknot drummer, was unable to attend. Jay had recently performed with King Gizzard at their Colorado festival the previous week. When the band sought to continue their tradition of featuring Jay at the Queens venue, they received a creative solution from the younger Weinberg, who suggested his father step in instead.
According to band member Joey Walker, Jay was occupied in Nashville but made the call to bring his father from Atlantic City to participate. Max joined the group as a second drummer for an extended performance of “Hot Water.” The surprise guest appearance delighted the crowd as the legendary musician took his place alongside the band’s primary drummer.
King Gizzard’s Forest Hills Stadium engagement continues through the weekend, with the band scheduled to perform additional shows in the New York area before moving on to other venues.
