A coalition of prominent Hollywood figures has unveiled a framework for integrating artificial intelligence into the entertainment industry while preserving human creative control. The group, which includes filmmakers, actors, and studio executives, has been meeting privately since November 2023, with LucasFilm’s Kathleen Kennedy and the American Film Institute’s Susan Ruskin leading the initiative. Following a gathering of approximately 120 participants, the coalition published its “Human Generative Workflows” document designed to establish common ground on how AI can support rather than replace creative professionals.
The framework addresses a critical ambiguity in current industry discussions: the term “AI” is applied indiscriminately to vastly different technologies, from color-correction software to synthetic performances that eliminate the need for actors. The group proposes developing a classification system that distinguishes between tools assisting human creativity and generative systems that substitute for human work. According to their proposal, AI-assisted processes like upscaling and motion-capture technology can produce copyrightable material, while synthetic voices and likenesses that replace human artists cannot.
The initiative reflects growing recognition within entertainment leadership that artificial intelligence’s role in filmmaking requires thoughtful integration rather than blanket rejection.
