The Sarajevo Film Festival and its industry counterpart, CineLink Industry Days, serve as crucial platforms for emerging filmmakers across Southeast Europe. The region possesses considerable creative talent yet struggles with limited institutional support systems needed to sustain careers beyond the early stages.
According to industry leaders, festivals and markets have become increasingly essential as the film sector navigates technological disruption, economic challenges, and geopolitical pressures affecting both regional and global cinema. CineLink industry head Maša Marković emphasized that these gatherings do more than identify promising talent—they actively mentor creators throughout their professional journeys. She stated that institutional support becomes even more critical during periods of rapid industry change.
This year’s CineLink programming explores fundamental questions about access and responsibility in film, featuring panel discussions addressing how festivals shape the global ecosystem and determining which European films gain international recognition. The Co-Production Market showcases sixteen regional projects, with nine directed or co-directed by women, including works from award-winning filmmakers such as Bulgarian director Ralitza Petrova and Slovenian filmmaker Urška Djukić.
While Southeast Europe demonstrates significant creative potential, Marković identified a key challenge: talented professionals often face career limitations after initial success. The region excels at developing entry-level practitioners but struggles to provide pathways for sustained professional growth, a gap the festival aims to address through expanded programming and industry partnerships.
