Chinese filmmaker Ah Biao’s directorial debut “Border” has secured international distribution through Paris-based sales company Reel Suspects ahead of its world premiere at the San Sebastián Film Festival. The feature will compete for the Golden Shell at the prestigious festival, placing Ah Biao among an accomplished lineup of established directors.
The film follows a solitary miner in a remote town whose mundane existence is disrupted when a mysterious woman enters his life, prompting him to venture into unfamiliar terrain. As he pursues her, he discovers she harbors secrets about her true identity. The production brings together talent from Hong Kong, the United States, South Korea, and Japan, with a cast including Zheyan Li, Feng Qi, and Sanming Han.
Matteo Lovadina, CEO of Reel Suspects, expressed enthusiasm for introducing Ah Biao’s work to global audiences, highlighting the filmmaker’s distinctive visual approach and fresh perspective on contemporary Chinese-language cinema. Ah Biao, originally from Shanxi and now based in Bangkok, works as a director, screenwriter, and cinematographer. “Border” represents a significant achievement as an independently produced first feature earning competition status at a major international festival.
The film has also been selected among 24 titles considered for the Sebastiane Award, which recognizes outstanding portrayals of LGBTIQA+ lives and experiences. Producer Jenny Man Wu emphasized the meaningful accomplishment of bringing an independently produced debut to the festival’s official competition lineup.
