Samsung Electronics is requesting that a judge dismiss singer Dua Lipa’s $15 million lawsuit regarding the unauthorized use of her image on television packaging. The electronics manufacturer filed the motion this week, arguing that displaying her photograph on product boxes does not constitute an endorsement of the televisions themselves.
According to Samsung’s legal team, the singer’s image appeared on boxes for televisions featuring Samsung TV Plus to showcase the Xite Hits channel alongside other content partners’ logos. The company maintains it obtained permission from a third-party content partner before using the photograph for retail packaging and denies any intentional misuse occurred.
Lipa’s legal representatives initiated the California court case in May after multiple cease-and-desist notices were allegedly disregarded. The complaint alleges copyright infringement, trademark violations, and unauthorized commercial exploitation of her likeness on cardboard television boxes distributed for retail sale.
Samsung previously stated it received explicit assurance from a content partner that proper authorization had been secured for using the image on retail materials. Neither Lipa’s representatives nor Samsung have provided additional statements regarding the dismissal motion at this time.
