Sam Register is stepping down from his position leading Warner Bros. Animation, Cartoon Network Studios, and Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe as his contract concludes. Warner Bros. TV Group chair Channing Dungey confirmed the departure in an internal memo, noting that both parties mutually decided against renewing Register’s agreement. The executive will leave the company next week after nearly two decades in his role.
Register expressed gratitude for his time at the studio, stating he is ready to pursue new opportunities. “It’s been an amazing ride,” he said in a statement, thanking colleagues for their collaborative efforts over the years. Dungey acknowledged that Register’s exit may come as unexpected news and indicated that a search for his successor is already underway.
During the transition period, existing leadership will maintain their current responsibilities. Matt Matzkin will oversee business operations, while department heads including Jay Bastian, Jason DeMarco, Audrey Diehl, Sarah Fell, Peter Girardi, and Sammy Perlmutter will continue managing their respective creative divisions. Register’s extensive career in animation spans over 30 years within Warner Bros. Discovery, having started at Cartoon Network in 1994 before joining Warner Bros. Animation as a producer in 2007.
Throughout his tenure, Register oversaw the production of numerous successful animated series and films, ranging from revival projects like “Animaniacs” to original content such as “Harley Quinn” and “Young Justice,” establishing himself as a significant figure in the animation industry.
