After a decade working as an assistant director alongside some of South America’s most celebrated filmmakers, Felipe Solari Yrigoyen is stepping behind the camera for the first time. His experience includes collaborations with Rodrigo Moreno on “The Delinquents,” Martín Rejtman on “The Practice,” and Santiago Mitre on the forthcoming “Villaflor.” Now, Solari Yrigoyen is preparing to direct his debut feature, “The Amateurs,” which was recently presented at Venice’s Gap-Financing Market.
The film takes audiences to a Patagonian setting where chaos erupts during an unconventional movie convention. The story follows an eclectic group of amateur investigators as they unravel mysteries involving missing artifacts and mysterious guests. The project originated from Solari Yrigoyen’s ambition to craft a crime comedy that blends intrigue with humor in an imaginative festival environment. He chose the convention setting to create a unique cinematic universe filled with passionate fans and colorful characters.
Production is slated to move forward with support from Quijote Films and veteran producer Giancarlo Nasi. Filming will likely take place in Chile, utilizing funding from both Chilean and Argentine film grants. The decision to look beyond Argentina reflects current challenges facing the nation’s film industry. Solari Yrigoyen emphasized the importance of continuing film production despite difficult circumstances, noting that expanding production across borders helps sustain South American cinema during this challenging period.
