Rob Reiner has posthumously received an Emmy Award for his guest appearance on the FX series “The Bear.” The acclaimed director and actor, who passed away nine months ago along with his wife Michele Singer Reiner, won in the outstanding guest actor in a comedy series category. Reiner’s victory came as he competed against several notable performers, including Michael J. Fox and Brett Goldstein from “Shrinking,” as well as Christopher McDonald from “Hacks.”
Actress Wendi McLendon-Covey accepted the honor on Reiner’s behalf, receiving an extended standing ovation from the Emmy audience. This recognition marks a historic achievement in television awards history. The 48-year gap between Reiner’s previous Emmy win in 1978 for “All in the Family” and this latest award now holds the record for the longest span between acting Emmy victories, surpassing the previous record set by his own father, Carl Reiner, who had a 37-year gap between wins.
Reiner’s career spanned decades as both a director and performer, with his filmography including beloved classics such as “The Princess Bride,” “When Harry Met Sally,” and “A Few Good Men.” His appearance in “The Bear” represents one of his final on-screen performances. This posthumous Emmy joins the recognition Reiner received earlier this year when he was honored during the In Memoriam segment at the Academy Awards ceremony.
