Rio de Janeiro’s municipal film agency RioFilme is preparing to unveil a substantial new funding initiative designed to support international collaborative productions. The program will make R$15 million available to finance up to four co-production projects involving companies based in the Brazilian city. RioFilme president Leonardo Edde will present the specifics of this funding opportunity during a panel discussion scheduled for the Gramado Film Market at the upcoming Gramado Fest 2026.
Both fictional and animated feature films qualify for consideration under the new incentive program. Applicants must comply with Brazilian regulatory frameworks, with specific requirements varying depending on whether their international partners hail from countries with established co-production treaties with Brazil. The initiative represents part of a broader strategy to position Rio de Janeiro as a premier global destination for film and television production.
Rio has experienced remarkable growth in production activity, hosting 40 international productions during the first half of 2026, compared to 28 in the same period the previous year. This expansion has helped the city surpass traditional production hubs like Paris and Mexico City in terms of filming days. Looking forward, RioFilme aims to strengthen partnerships with fellow Brics nations—particularly China, Russia, and India—to further develop the city’s status as a world-class production center.
