India’s wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant sustained an injury to his left arm during the first day of the second Test match against Sri Lanka in Colombo on Sunday. The injury occurred when he attempted to play a short delivery from Sri Lankan fast bowler Laharu Kumara, missing the shot and being struck on the arm instead. Medical staff provided immediate attention, initially applying ice and tape to the affected area, though the tape was later removed as Pant continued to experience discomfort.
Pant departed the field after contributing just three runs from 15 deliveries in the 58th over of India’s innings. His replacement at the crease was all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who batted alongside Devdutt Padikkal. The development raised questions about the player’s availability for the second day of the match.
India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak expressed optimism regarding Pant’s participation, stating that the player is anticipated to be fit enough to continue playing in the Test. This assessment came during the post-play press conference following the opening day’s action.
Despite the setback caused by Pant’s injury and subsequent wicket losses, India reached a score of 300 runs for five wickets at the end of day one. Devdutt Padikkal played a crucial role in building this total, scoring 117 runs off 168 balls. Dhruv Jurel and debutant Saransh Jain remained unbeaten at the close of play.
