The striker’s 60th-minute finish, which initially appeared to be ruled out for offside, was ultimately awarded following a video assistant referee intervention, sparking considerable debate about the decision’s validity.
The controversy centers on the involvement of midfielder Enzo Fernandez, who attempted a diving header in an offside position as Haaland finished at the back post from Josko Gvardiol’s cross. Pro Ref stated in its statement that while Fernandez did not touch the ball, the VAR should have recommended an on-field review given the subjective nature of whether he interfered with play.
