Rancho Mirage High School’s football program appeared to turn a corner Friday night with a commanding 19-7 victory over Yucca Valley to open the 2026 season. The Rattlers’ dominant defensive performance showcased a dramatic improvement after a disappointing 2025 campaign that ended with five consecutive losses and a last-place finish in the Desert Empire League.
The Rattlers’ offensive attack was led by quarterback Cael Woody, a senior dual-threat signal-caller who threw three touchdown passes while executing the read-option effectively throughout the contest. Receiver Jadarius Hester hauled in two of those scoring passes, while Reid Keane added another touchdown with just 19 seconds remaining to seal the outcome. Deegan Storm accounted for the Trojans’ only touchdown in the third quarter, but it proved insufficient against Rancho Mirage’s stingy defense.
Perhaps most impressively, the Rattlers’ defense limited Yucca Valley’s star receiver Aiden Pope without a touchdown and intercepted three passes in the first half alone, including two near the goal line. The defensive dominance suggests that Rancho Mirage enters this season with renewed motivation following last year’s struggles. For Yucca Valley, despite roster talent that was expected to produce an explosive offense, the Trojans struggled to establish offensive rhythm and will need significant improvements in ball distribution moving forward.
