The Fondazione Prada established its film financing initiative last year at Venice, creating a support system for independent filmmakers globally without genre, thematic, or linguistic boundaries. The program has already demonstrated its impact this year, with director Rubaiyat Hossain’s “The Difficult Bride” among its inaugural beneficiaries, competing in Venice’s Horizons category while additional grant recipients will be announced in February.
Paolo Moretti, who leads the fund alongside programmer Rebecca De Pas, discussed the initiative’s unexpectedly robust reception. The effort attracted approximately 1,200 submissions in its first year—a volume that surprised organizers and prompted structural adjustments. Rather than delay selections, the team expanded their initial slate from 12 to 14 projects by redistributing available resources, ensuring each submission received thorough consideration.
The fund prioritizes experimental arthouse cinema, with supported projects generally ranging from several hundred thousand euros to five million euros in budget. However, Moretti emphasized the foundation maintains flexibility to exceed these thresholds for compelling work aligned with its mission. Currently operating with a €1.5 million budget, the initiative’s future funding remains uncertain, though the overwhelming response suggests potential expansion may be warranted to meet documented industry demand.
