Sebastian Altamar of Portsmouth High School has been named the Seacoast region’s Defensive Preseason Player of the Year following a community vote. The senior safety secured the honor by garnering more than half of the votes cast in the online poll, demonstrating strong recognition from local sports fans.
Altamar’s victory was decisive, earning 52.7% of the 7,018 total votes. The competition for the award was fierce, with St. Thomas Aquinas senior end Jack Brennan finishing in second place with 33.5% of votes. Dover’s Ryan Hebert rounded out the top three, while Thomas Lyons of Winnacunnet and Mason Irwin of Traip Academy each received support but finished further back in the voting.
Portsmouth head coach Brian Pafford praised Altamar’s selection as well-deserved, highlighting the athlete’s exceptional understanding of the game. According to Pafford, Altamar functions as a defensive leader from his safety position, calling plays and demonstrating the kind of football intelligence that sets elite players apart. The coach emphasized that Altamar’s success stems from dedication across multiple dimensions—physical conditioning, mental preparation, and emotional maturity.
