Pixar’s beloved animated film “Cars” is making a triumphant return to movie theaters beginning September 4 to mark two decades since its original release. The theatrical comeback aligns with Lightning McQueen Day on September 5, a date selected to honor the main character’s iconic race car number, 95, voiced by Owen Wilson.
The studio is planning an extensive year-long celebration featuring multiple special events and partnerships. Fans will have opportunities to experience themed screenings at select drive-in and independent theaters, while automotive museums across the United States, England, and Italy will showcase life-size character exhibits. Additionally, Pixar is collaborating with major motorsport events, including a presence at the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix at Monza and a NASCAR activation at the Daytona 500 in February.
The 2006 film follows a young race car who becomes stranded in a small town and discovers that success extends beyond winning races. The film’s ensemble cast featured Paul Newman, Larry the Cable Guy, and Bonnie Hunt, with John Lasseter directing. The original soundtrack by Randy Newman complemented the story, and the film earned critical acclaim, winning a Golden Globe for Best Animated Film and receiving multiple Oscar nominations including Best Animated Feature.
