Pioneer School’s junior and senior high school building remains temporarily closed following flood damage, but the athletic department has developed a plan to continue hosting home events this fall. Athletic Director John Bingaman announced that volleyball matches will relocate to the elementary school gymnasium while the main building undergoes restoration work.
Football games will proceed as scheduled at the outdoor field, though portable restroom facilities have been brought in to accommodate the change in operations. The volleyball team is set to host matches against Argos and Caston at the elementary school gym, allowing the program to maintain its home game schedule despite the facility disruption.
Water damage to the school’s tunnel system has created significant humidity issues throughout the building, necessitating extensive remediation efforts. The school is working with an outside restoration company to remove water and humidity while a separate air quality testing company monitors conditions for safety. Bingaman expressed optimism about a potential reopening by the following Monday but acknowledged the timeline depends on the restoration company’s progress.
Students have been participating in remote learning since early dismissal on August 12. Elementary grades K-6 have continued in-person instruction at the elementary building. School officials are prioritizing the building’s reopening to limit extended remote learning periods for affected students.
