Ontario girls soccer coach Larry Atkinson achieved a significant milestone on Tuesday, Aug. 25, when his team defeated Madison 2-0 in a Richland County rivalry matchup. The victory marked Atkinson’s 300th career win, bringing his overall record to 300-81-30 through 21 seasons at the helm of the Warriors program.
Atkinson, who has led Ontario since 2006, has built one of the most successful girls soccer programs in the region. Under his direction, the Warriors have captured nine league championships, nine district titles, three regional crowns, and earned a state runner-up finish in 2012. The program averages more than 14 victories per season. Goals from junior Kamryn Pelphrey and Jordyn Yeager secured the shutout victory against Madison.
When reflecting on the accomplishment, Atkinson emphasized that his focus extends far beyond accumulating wins. He credited his coaching staff, including his son and assistant coach Greg Atkinson, as well as support from players and families throughout his tenure. Atkinson stressed the importance of helping students develop resilience and compete at their highest level while enjoying the sport itself.
Atkinson indicated he has no plans to step away from coaching as long as he continues to derive enjoyment from the position and believes he is effectively impacting his players’ development both on and off the field.
