Olivia Rodrigo has made her track “Serena Joy” widely available across streaming platforms just days after initially releasing it exclusively on compact disc. The song, which features synthesizer-driven production reminiscent of new wave influences, draws thematic inspiration from the television adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel. Rodrigo collaborated with longtime producer Dan Nigro on the composition.
The artist revealed in a recent interview that “Serena Joy” was originally written and recorded during sessions for her previous album but ultimately did not make the final cut. She explained that the earlier project followed a specific narrative arc centered on a romantic relationship, and the new track did not align with that storyline. Despite being shelved at the time, Rodrigo expressed enthusiasm about the song and anticipated its eventual release.
Prior to its digital rollout, “Serena Joy” was available solely through a limited compact disc release at an independent record store in Tustin, California, located near Rodrigo’s inaugural Daisy Chain Fields festival site. The store’s management expressed pride in supporting both the artist and the women-focused music event. Rodrigo plans to debut the track during her headlining performance at the festival, scheduled for August 29, with proceeds benefiting causes aligned with the event’s mission.
