Sunderland AFC has completed the signing of Belgian winger Malick Fofana from Ligue 1 club Lyon. The two clubs confirmed the transfer, with the Black Cats agreeing to pay €35 million upfront plus an additional €5 million in performance-based add-ons, bringing the total package to €40 million. Lyon also secured a sell-on clause as part of the arrangement. The deal was finalized following extended negotiations between Sunderland, Lyon, and Fofana’s representatives during the final days of the transfer window.
The 21-year-old attracted considerable attention from multiple Premier League sides throughout the summer. Arsenal had explored a move but declined to match Lyon’s asking price, while Crystal Palace made a late attempt to hijack the deal. Despite efforts from Crystal Palace manager Pierre Sage to persuade his former player to join Selhurst Park, Sunderland ultimately prevailed in the pursuit.
Fofana arrived at Lyon from Belgian club Gent in January 2024 and quickly became one of the Ligue 1 side’s most exciting attacking talents. His departure marks a significant blow to Lyon, who were forced to offload the winger after failing to secure Champions League qualification. The Premier League newcomer is expected to be available for Sunderland’s upcoming fixture against Brentford this weekend.
