German second-tier club St. Pauli has officially completed the acquisition of goalkeeper Dimitar Mitov from Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen. The transfer, which took place on Thursday, saw the Bulgarian international join the club on a three-year contract, with the deal valued at €400,000 according to transfer market sources.
Mitov’s arrival comes as St. Pauli seeks to rebuild its goalkeeping department following relegation from the Bundesliga. The club previously lost Nikola Vasilj, who departed to join Saudi Pro League newcomers Al-Diriyah rather than renew his contract. Ben Voll filled the goalkeeper position in St. Pauli’s opening second-tier fixture, a draw with Greuther Fürth, but the 29-year-old Mitov is now expected to become the primary option between the posts.
During his time at Aberdeen, the former Cambridge United and St. Johnstone player established himself as a key performer, making 42 appearances in his final season. He played a crucial role in the club’s impressive 2024-25 campaign, which culminated in winning the Scottish Cup—the team’s first such trophy since 1990. Mitov notably saved two penalties during the cup final victory against Celtic.
St. Pauli manager Marcel Rapp praised Mitov’s qualities, highlighting his composure and commanding presence in goal. The goalkeeper expressed enthusiasm about joining the German club, stating his eagerness to integrate with the squad and contribute to the team’s objectives.
