Scientists attribute this extreme warming to a combination of long-term human-caused climate change and the intensifying effects of El Niño, a natural weather pattern characterized by unusually warm Pacific waters.
The timing of this record is particularly striking, as peak ocean temperatures typically occur in March or April rather than late summer. Multiple months throughout the year have now broken temperature records, signaling that marine ecosystems are experiencing unprecedented stress. The warming ocean creates cascading problems, including rising sea levels that threaten coastal communities, destructive marine heat waves, and damage to coral reefs and other vital ecosystems that support global food chains.
Experts warn that current El Niño conditions are intensifying and may become the strongest on record since the 19th century. Climate forecasters predict more than 90 percent likelihood of very strong conditions developing in the coming months.
