The New York Times has launched a sports-themed version of its popular word puzzle game in collaboration with The Athletic. Today’s edition, puzzle #718, may prove particularly accessible to fans of women’s professional basketball.
In this variant of the original Connections game, players must identify common links between 16 words arranged into four distinct categories. Each correct grouping removes those words from the board, while incorrect guesses count against a limited error allowance. The puzzle’s difficulty increases with color-coding, beginning with yellow for easiest and progressing through green, blue, and purple for most challenging. Participants can shuffle the board layout to aid pattern recognition and share their results on social media.
Today’s puzzle includes four themed groups: NFL injury designations, methods of reaching first base in baseball, Las Vegas Aces players, and phrases completing the word “dunk.” The solutions reveal DOUBTFUL, OUT, PROBABLE, and QUESTIONABLE as injury statuses; ERROR, HIT BY PITCH, SINGLE, and WALK as baseball base-reaching methods; GRAY, LOYD, WILSON, and YOUNG as Aces roster members; and NIKE, REVERSE, SLAM, and WINDMILL as dunk variations.
Like its predecessor Wordle, the sports edition resets daily with fresh puzzles, offering enthusiasts continuous engagement with sports-centric word challenges.
