The New York Times Connections puzzle has become a widely popular word game since its launch. Associate puzzle editor Wyna Liu helped develop the game, which challenges players to identify common themes linking groups of words. The daily puzzle resets after midnight and progressively increases in difficulty, keeping players engaged with fresh content.
Connections presents 16 words that must be organized into four distinct categories. Players earn points by correctly matching all four words within a category, which are then removed from the board. The game allows up to four incorrect guesses before ending. Each category is color-coded by difficulty level, with yellow being the simplest, followed by green, blue, and purple. Players can shuffle the board layout to help identify patterns more easily.
Today’s puzzle number 1165 contains four themed groupings: pizza varieties including diavola, Hawaiian, meat lovers, and white; numerical classifications such as atomic, serial, social security, and telephone numbers; typographical symbols that share similar shapes, including apostrophes, cedillas, commas, and okinas; and finally, words beginning with Chinese zodiac animals—dragonfly, Oxford, pigment, and ratchet.
Like the popular Wordle game, Connections allows players to share their results on social media platforms, creating a community around daily puzzle-solving challenges.
