The New York Film Festival has announced its Spotlight programming for its 64th edition, featuring a carefully curated selection of acclaimed filmmakers and anticipated releases. Among the standout selections is Tom McCarthy’s “A Statement,” which centers on a crucial 1980 climate conference and brings together an impressive ensemble cast including Paul Giamatti, John Turturro, Paul Rudd, Amy Ryan, Evan Peters and Tatiana Maslany. McCarthy, known for directing the Oscar-winning “Spotlight,” will distribute the film through Sony Pictures Classics.
The Spotlight slate also includes Jonathan Glazer’s latest work, “Joy of Joys,” a documentary examining the creation of a charity album for children affected by conflict zones, reuniting the director with composer Mica Levi following his internationally acclaimed film “The Zone of Interest.” Additionally, Cristian Mungiu’s Palme d’Or winner “Fjord” and Takashi Yamazaki’s “Godzilla Minus Zero” round out the high-profile offerings, with the latter serving as the section’s gala presentation.
The programming extends beyond narrative features to encompass diverse storytelling formats. Animated work, documentaries, and directorial debuts complement the lineup, which includes Werner Herzog’s return to the festival after more than four decades with “Bucking Fastard,” starring real-life sisters Kate and Rooney Mara. The complete Spotlight section comprises 13 features and 10 shorts, running from September 25 through October 12 at Lincoln Center and venues throughout New York City.
