British filmmaker Lakeem Rose is making his feature directorial debut with a reimagined take on Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing.” The contemporary adaptation relocates the classic comedy to a post-war setting, following four military veterans as they reconnect at a friend’s residence. The familiar Shakespearean themes of romance, conflict, and deception take on new dimensions within this modern-day context.
Rose’s approach maintains Shakespeare’s original Early Modern English dialogue, supplemented by contemporary subtitles, while transforming the visual world around the text. The production will incorporate silent cinema techniques throughout the narrative, blending classical filmmaking styles with the contemporary military backdrop. Rose studied how performers like Kenneth Branagh have brought Shakespearean language to the screen and aims to demonstrate how the 400-year-old text remains relevant when placed in a setting that resonates with modern audiences.
The project brings together an international production team including Canadian producers Plato Fountidakis and Paul Rapovski from Fast Motion Films, alongside Hong Kong-based producer Mike Leeder. The producers bring extensive experience in genre filmmaking and action design, having worked on franchises including “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” and the “Ip Man” series. Clever Creature will handle international sales and distribution for the film, which is currently in development with a targeted 2027 release date. Rose and his team plan to present the project at the Toronto Film Festival market.
