Three production companies spanning North America and Africa have joined forces to adapt a celebrated Moroccan crime novel for film. Hollywood Ventures Group, Big Picture Cinema Group of Canada, and Pink Sheep Productions are developing “The Final Bet,” based on Abdelilah Hamdouchi’s 2001 bestseller set in Casablanca. The psychological thriller explores themes of corruption and justice through the story of a man accused of murdering his wealthy spouse who must navigate systemic deception to clear his name.
Hamdouchi’s novel holds distinction as the first Arabic detective work translated into English. The author expressed enthusiasm about the transition to cinema, noting that film allows literary narratives to gain new dimensions through visual storytelling and performance. Glenn Gainor of Hollywood Ventures Group emphasized the project’s relevance beyond fiction, highlighting how the narrative addresses legal and social transformation in Morocco while raising universal questions about fairness and institutional accountability.
The production team is currently presenting the project at the Toronto film market with plans to begin filming in 2027. Big Picture Cinema Group president Jayce Barreiro credited the source material’s vivid depiction of Casablanca as a key element that will distinguish the adaptation. Producers from Pink Sheep Productions described the endeavor as both an honor and responsibility, stressing their commitment to preserving the story’s Moroccan identity while crafting an international appeal.
