Mubi, a prominent global film distributor and production company, has acquired streaming rights to “The Meltdown,” a drama from Chilean filmmaker Manuela Martelli. The film, which debuted at the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival in May, will become available on the Mubi platform following its September screening at the San Sebastian Film Festival’s Horizontes Latinos program, a key venue for Latin American cinema.
Set in a post-Pinochet Chilean ski resort, the film centers on a young girl navigating troubling circumstances that challenge her sense of loyalty. The international production features Maya O’Rourke in her film debut alongside accomplished performers including Paulina Urrutia and Mauricio Peñatilich. Martelli, known for her previous work “Chile’76,” wrote and directed the film, which represents a collaborative effort between production companies across Chile, the United States, Mexico, and Spain.
The acquisition comes amid significant challenges for Chile’s film industry. The administration of President Jose Antonio Kast has announced substantial budget reductions affecting the country’s cultural sector. Most notably, the Audiovisual Investment Support Fund faces a dramatic 64 percent cut, declining from approximately $586,000 to $208,000 annually. Producer Alejandra Garcia criticized the decision, noting that such cuts undermine Chilean cinema at a pivotal moment when three Chilean filmmakers were represented at Cannes this year, marking unprecedented international recognition for the country’s film industry.
