The Motion Picture Association and ByteDance announced a new agreement on Monday designed to safeguard intellectual property across the technology company’s artificial intelligence generative tools. The framework covers ByteDance’s AI video and image creation platforms, including Seedance and Seedream, which are integrated into several of the company’s applications such as TikTok and CapCut.
The memorandum of understanding comes after months of tension between the organizations. In February, the MPA had issued a cease-and-desist letter to ByteDance, criticizing the company for allegedly violating copyright protections on a widespread basis following the launch of Seedance 2.0. The platform had enabled users to generate content mimicking well-known actors, prompting strong objections from the film and television sector.
ByteDance subsequently released updated versions of both platforms last month, incorporating the protective measures negotiated with the MPA. Association leadership stated that the agreement demonstrates the industry’s dedication to preserving copyright as a fundamental principle. ByteDance’s legal representative emphasized the company’s commitment to responsible artificial intelligence development that includes robust protections for creative rights holders across multiple global markets.
