Microsoft is consolidating its separate consumer and enterprise artificial intelligence assistants into a unified platform. The technology company plans to merge its standard Copilot application with Microsoft 365 Copilot, creating an integrated experience that serves both personal and professional users under a single interface branded as Microsoft Copilot with a redesigned icon.
The consolidation addresses a long-standing user frustration: the presence of duplicate Copilot icons cluttering Windows taskbars and system trays. According to Microsoft’s announcement, the merged application will preserve core functionalities including chat capabilities, image generation, and Microsoft 365 integration while maintaining visual improvements. The company describes this as combining “the best of Copilot chat and image creation, with the power of Microsoft 365 for your work.”
The rollout will occur in phases, with mobile and web versions launching in mid-August, followed by Windows and Mac applications in mid-September. The company emphasizes that security and compliance measures remain unchanged, with personal and work accounts remaining completely separate within the new app. However, users should note that certain features including Podcasts and Deep Research functionality will be discontinued as part of this transition.
