The Green Bay Packers completed their first roster move toward building their 53-player roster, releasing safety Tra Fluellen following their preseason finale against Arizona on Friday night. The decision created the necessary salary cap space to officially add veteran tight end Jonnu Smith to the team’s roster.
Fluellen, who had joined the Packers in mid-August after spending the previous season in the UFL, appeared in all three preseason contests. His departure marked the initial step in what will be a series of difficult roster decisions as the team faces a Sunday afternoon deadline to reach the required 53-player limit.
Smith brings extensive NFL experience to Green Bay’s tight end rotation, entering his ninth professional season with 345 career receptions and 30 receiving touchdowns. The veteran previously played for the Tennessee Titans under head coach Matt LaFleur in 2018. Most recently with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Smith earned Pro Bowl honors with Miami in 2024, when he recorded 88 receptions and eight touchdowns. LaFleur praised Smith’s versatility and impact, describing him as both a “great guy” and an “explosive” offensive weapon.
Smith is expected to compete alongside Tucker Kraft to form Green Bay’s tight end corps for the upcoming season. The Packers have not yet assigned him a uniform number, with that decision likely coming after final roster cuts are completed.
