Jaxon Kohler, a former Michigan State basketball player, has committed to Brigham Young University after receiving an unexpected opportunity to continue his college career. A recent federal court ruling granted the 2022 recruiting class an additional year of eligibility, allowing the 23-year-old frontcourt player to pursue further collegiate competition.
Kohler spent four seasons with the Spartans, most recently averaging 12.5 points and 8.9 rebounds while shooting efficiently from both the field and three-point range. His team advanced to the Sweet 16 during that campaign. His college journey appeared complete after he participated in the NBA Summer League with the Utah Jazz, but the court decision changed the trajectory of his athletic career.
Michigan State’s roster had already been finalized with other frontcourt additions by the time the court order was issued, leaving no space for Kohler’s return to East Lansing. BYU, located in Kohler’s home state of Utah, offered the American Fork native a new landing spot. The commitment came after the player considered multiple high-profile programs, including Kentucky, Louisville, and Kansas, before ultimately selecting the Cougars.
