Lionsgate has unveiled plans to move forward with a sequel to the blockbuster Michael Jackson biopic “Michael.” According to Adam Fogelson, the studio’s motion picture chief, production on the follow-up film is expected to commence in the final months of 2026 or during early 2027, with a theatrical release targeted for late 2027 or the first half of 2028.
The original “Michael,” which premiered this spring and grossed $1 billion worldwide, concluded with a message stating “His Story Continues,” signaling the filmmakers’ intention to extend the Jackson narrative. Director Antoine Fuqua’s first installment, which starred Jackson’s nephew Jaafar Jackson, chronicled the entertainer’s rise from his days with the Jackson 5 through his iconic career trajectory, ending with the 1987 “Bad” tour.
Fogelson indicated that footage previously shot for the first film, including elaborate musical sequences, will likely be repurposed in the sequel. He explained that the studio intends to create “the biggest, best sequel” worthy of audiences’ expectations, though he declined to provide specific budget details at this time. The continuation presents an opportunity to explore significant periods in Jackson’s life, including his acclaimed “Dangerous” album era.
The original film faced last-minute legal complications that required substantial revisions to its narrative, resulting in the omission of certain controversial elements from Jackson’s biography. Fogelson suggested that some of this previously excluded material could potentially be incorporated into the upcoming sequel.
