Marquette women’s soccer earned a crucial point on the road against Wisconsin on Sunday, extending their undefeated streak to open the season. The Golden Eagles faced significant pressure throughout the match, finding themselves heavily outshot in the first half and continuing to absorb Wisconsin’s offensive pressure early in the second period. Despite the Badgers’ dominance in possession and shot attempts, the scoreline remained level.
Wisconsin finally broke through in the 66th minute when a penalty kick was awarded following a video review that determined a foul had occurred in the box. The Badgers converted the spot kick to take a 1-0 lead, marking the first goal surrendered by freshman keeper Mia Hurd this season. However, Marquette responded dramatically in the 79th minute when freshman Kaylie Sheehan scored her first collegiate goal, chipping the ball over Wisconsin’s goalkeeper to equalize and preserve the undefeated record.
The draw was sealed when Hurd recorded her fifth save of the contest in the remaining minutes. Marquette improved to 3-0-1 on the season with 11 goals scored and just two penalty kicks allowed. The Golden Eagles will return to action Thursday evening at Valley Fields against crosstown rival Milwaukee in what promises to be well-attended by the campus community.
