Actor Mark Ruffalo has faced criticism from two major Jewish advocacy organizations for statements they characterize as antisemitic. The Simon Wiesenthal Center and Creative Communities for Peace released separate statements condemning what they describe as prejudicial rhetoric, with executives from both groups arguing that Ruffalo crossed a line from legitimate criticism into harmful stereotyping.
The controversy stems from Ruffalo’s social media posts regarding a major media industry acquisition. The actor reposted a video featuring Safra Catz, a board member at Paramount Skydance, accompanying it with commentary that invoked the Israel-Hamas conflict in a manner the advocacy groups say was inappropriate and inflammatory. Paramount responded with a rare public statement expressing concern about the use of antisemitic tropes in connection with a business dispute.
Ruffalo has been vocal in his opposition to the Paramount Skydance deal and has criticized key figures involved in the transaction. In his defense, the actor disputed the antisemitism allegations on social media, calling them “fundamentally dishonest.” However, representatives from both advocacy groups maintained that intent does not diminish the impact of such messaging, and they emphasized the responsibility of public figures to avoid language that echoes historical antisemitic themes regardless of the underlying subject matter.
