Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is currently undergoing medical examinations and a procedure recommended by his medical team, according to an announcement from the government. The 79-year-old leader is expected to remain under medical observation for approximately two days as part of the treatment process.
Senior Press Secretary Tunku Nashrul Abaidah confirmed the medical intervention on Monday, though officials declined to disclose specific details about the nature of the procedure. In a statement, Tunku Nashrul expressed hopes for the prime minister’s swift recovery and return to his regular duties.
The announcement coincided with Anwar’s birthday, marking his 79th year since his birth on August 10, 1947. He has held the office of prime minister since November 2022. A previous routine medical examination conducted in January had indicated that Anwar was in satisfactory health and capable of fulfilling his official responsibilities.
Anwar has a history of musculoskeletal health issues, having previously received treatment for back and shoulder complications. In 2018, he underwent spinal surgery and shoulder procedures abroad. However, officials have indicated no apparent connection between the current medical procedure and his earlier conditions.
