Proceedings commenced Monday in the highly publicized case against Grammy-winning rapper Lil Durk, with the defense and prosecution presenting starkly contrasting narratives. The rapper’s legal team argued that their client was being scapegoated by a co-defendant seeking leniency, while prosecutors claimed he orchestrated a premeditated murder plot fueled by revenge.
According to defense attorney Marissa Goldberg, co-defendant Kavon Grant—who worked at the rapper’s music management company—fabricated incriminating statements about Banks to reduce his own legal exposure. Goldberg asserted that Grant, not Banks, masterminded the operation, personally arranging travel and equipment for the alleged hitmen and holding deeper personal motivations stemming from his close relationship with a murder victim from 2020.
Federal prosecutors countered that Banks, whose real name is Durk Banks, used indirect communication to coordinate the violent act, which occurred on a Los Angeles street in August 2022. The shooting claimed an innocent bystander’s life and allegedly targeted a rival musician. Prosecutors stated that Grant and two other co-defendants have accepted plea agreements and would testify against Banks during the trial.
Banks, age 33, faces five charges including conspiracy and murder for hire. He maintains his innocence throughout the proceedings.
